아파트와 주택이 모두 살기 좋은 조건을 갖추고 있음에도 사람들이 여전히 주택을 선호하는 이유는 ‘자신만의 마당’이 주는 자유와 정서적 여유 때문이라고 생각했다. 본 프로젝트는 이러한 마당의 가치를 중심에 두고, 대지의 모든 공간이 관계를 맺으며 이야기를 만들어내는 주택을 목표로 했다.
본 주택의 클라이언트인 이우환은 미술가이자 조각가로서, 예술과 일상이 자연스럽게 이어지는 공간을 필요로 할 것이라 생각했다. 이에 따라 대지의 왼쪽 부분은 사적 공간, 오른쪽 부분에는 실내 작업실과 야외 작업 공간을 계획했으며 입구에서부터 쭉 뻗어있는 포장바닥의 동선이 야외 작업공간인 동시에 하나의 예술적 흐름처럼 느껴지도록 구성하였다.
본 프로젝트 제목의 ‘이야기 뜰’은 단순한 마당이 아닌, 삶과 예술, 자연이 교차하며 다양한 이야기가 그려지는 장소를 의미한다. 주택은 대지와 사람, 그리고 예술이 끊임없이 관계 맺는 열린 구조로 존재하며, 그 중심에는 언제나 ‘이야기의 뜰’이 자리한다.
Courtyard of Stories
Even though both apartments and detached houses provide comfortable living conditions, many people continue to prefer houses for the sense of freedom and emotional comfort that comes with having a private yard. This project is conceived around the value of such a yard — a home where every part of the site connects, interacts, and weaves a continuous narrative.
The client, artist and sculptor Lee Ufan, required a space where art and everyday life could flow seamlessly into one another. Accordingly, the left side of the site is organized as a private living area, while the right side accommodates both an indoor studio and an outdoor workspace. The paved path extending from the entrance functions not only as a route to the outdoor studio but also as a visual and spatial articulation of artistic continuity.
The title “Courtyard of Stories” signifies more than a simple yard — it represents a place where life, art, and nature intersect to generate multiple narratives. The house stands as an open structure in which the site, the people, and art continuously engage and redefine one another, with the Courtyard of Stories always at its heart.
